Fiscal Sponsorship

ACA’s Sponsored Projects program provides individuals or organizations involved in tax exempt arts, cultural and creative activities the ability to raise funds through tax-deductible donations, grant and contracts without forming a 501(c)3. The program also provides liability coverage, training and resources for emerging arts organizations, projects and individual creatives.

FAQ
  • What types of projects does ACA sponsor?

We fiscally sponsor individual artists or organizations that fit with our mission, that do not already have non-profit status but are not-for-profit by nature and are creative and/or cultural projects that serve the Austin and Central Texas Region.

Examples of types of projects the Creative Alliance Sponsors:

Arts Educators And/Or Arts Education Programs
Arts Organizations That Have Applied For 501( C )3 Tax Exempt Status And Are Awaiting IRS Approval
    Emerging Arts Groups
Independent Creatives From All Creative Disciplines
One Time Projects – Like A Festival Or Special Event
Small But Stable Arts Organizations That Are Under-Resourced And Have Minimal Staff
Mix Of All Or Some Of The Above In Any Creative Discipline

  • How much does ACA Fiscal Sponsorship cost?

To become a sponsored project you must pay an annual membership fee of $150, plus 10% of any donations or grants that we receive on your behalf. There is an optional $200 annual fee if you wish to be added to our liability insurance policy.

  • What are the differences between ACA Organizational Membership and Fiscal Sponsorship?

Organizational membership is open to any for-profit or non-profit organization. There is no application process required for Organizational members.

    Organizational membership benefits are:

    • eligibility to be featured on NowPlayingAustin.com
    • invitations to exclusive advocacy, policy and social events
    • free or discounted rates to ACA workshops
    • Actors Equity Paymaster services
    • policy input
    • nomination privileges for the ACA Board of Directors

In addition, Sponsored Projects also receive these benefits:

    * 501(c)3 tax-deductions for your donors
    • digital record keeping of donations and expenditures for IRS reporting purposes
    • tax receipt letters to donors acknowledging the deductibility of their donations
    • the ability to accept donations online, including monthly recurring donations
    • eligibility to apply for City Of Austin Cultural Arts Funding
    • publicity in the ACA newsletter
    • liability insurance for your events for an additional $200 annual fee

  • How long does it take to become sponsored?

The application approval process can take up to 90 days from when you attend a mandatory Fiscal Sponsorship Workshop. We accept fiscal sponsorship applications throughout the year. ACA staff will review applications, then make a recommendation to our Board of Directors, who will vote to accept or reject your project. Once a decision has been made you will be contacted via email.

  • Does being sponsored provide eligibility for corporate matching gifts?

Absolutely! If your donors would like for you to receive matching gifts from their employer please have them send us the necessary paperwork.

  • How does ACA process donations made by check?

While strongly prefer donations made online, we do process donations by check. All checks from your donors or grantors must be made out to “Austin Creative Alliance” with the name of your project written in the memo line of the check. We cannot accept checks made out directly to you or your project.

  • What is the process to apply for grants?

When it comes time for you to apply for a grant we request that you notify us before you begin the application process. When you apply for a grant as a sponsored project we are actually applying on your behalf, which means the most grantors will only accept one grant application from us per granting cycle. This means that if another sponsored project has approached us first about a particular grant before you do you will not be able to apply. Not every grantor has this policy – for example MAP Fund will accept applications from numerous sponsored projects umbrella-ed by the same fiscal sponsor.

When you notify us of your intent to apply for a grant please submit the following information:

    The Name Of The Grantor/Grant
    The Grant Application Requirements
    The Grant Application Deadline
A Brief Description Of The Project That You Wish To Fund If Awarded The Grant
Your application to apply for a grant will be automatically denied if the due date is less than 14 days from the date you notify us of your intent to apply for the grant.

Once you have notified us of your plan to submit a grant application we will notify you within 3 business days if you are approved to continue with the application process.

10 days before the grant application deadline you must submit to us a draft of your completed grant application for review.

  • Are there fees to apply for grants?

ACA doesn’t charge fees to apply for grants. If a grant is awarded to you, ACA will keep 10% of the award to cover the cost of administering the grant.

  • Can I apply for grants immediately after becoming fiscally sponsored?

Most grantors require that an organization have a well-developed track record of programming and an established donor base. Once you become sponsored it is important to spend your early days developing your programming and growing your donor base before you apply for grants.
